I just hung up from a phone call in which Deena Larsen & I interviewed each other for StoryCorps. Deena & I have been best buds for about 20 years, since the Dark Age Before the Web, when we were writing what’s now called electronic literature (it was hypertext, back then).
Four years ago, Deena lost her beloved wife MaJe, who still inspires her work; two years ago, I lost the love of my life Deborah, to whom We Descend is dedicated.
Talking with Deena is fun anytime, but this conversation was semi-formal, being undertaken as part of StoryCorps’ mission “to provide people of all backgrounds and beliefs with the opportunity to record, share and preserve the stories of our lives”, and we got a chance to reflect not only on why we love writing this way but who we think we’re speaking to when we do so.
A recording (and maybe a transcript) will be available online shortly — watch this space.
